What Exactly is a Creative Entrepreneur?

I was at a networking event recently trying to make more in person connections with other entrepreneurs when a guy asked me a question.

“Who do you work with?” he said.

“Creative Entrepreneurs”, I replied.

“Oh ok”, what exactly is a Creative Entrepreneur?" he asked, kind of lost on what I meant.

I explained to him that the term Creative Entrepreneur is becoming increasingly popular and I think it means different things to different people. Its fundamental meaning though, is a person who uses their creative abilities to make money. It’s one thing to be a painter but a Creative Entrepreneur takes their paintings and creates a business model around selling them to sustain a living for themselves.

I like to break Creative Entrepreneurs down into four categories: Artists, Makers, Movers and Shakers.

Artists

Designers, photographers, writers, illustrators, calligraphers etc. that have services they sell in order to make money doing what they love.

Makers

Florists, jewelry makers, hatters, painters, clothing designers, chefs etc. that make a physical product with their creative talents to sell to consumers.

Movers

Yogis, dancers, musicians, personal trainers, creative store owners etc. that use their creative talents and training to make a living with their skills.

Shakers

Health and life coaches, therapists, nutritionist, bloggers, activists, creative consultants etc. that use their leadership skills to coach others or share their message while also making a profit.

What do these four categories have in common? They all use their skills not just to create, but to also make money and support their careers.

So, next time you hear the buzzword “creative entrepreneur” think Artists, Makers, Movers and Shakers!
