You Don't Need a "Logo"

Starting a business is no easy feat, there are so many factors to consider.

What am I selling?
Why do customers even want to buy my product?
Who are the people that will buy from me?

With so many steps to take in order to get up and running it is often easy think that you need just a logo for your identity. In reality, your logo is only a portion of your overall brand.

A brand is the feeling that your dream clients have when they think about and interact with your business. It is made up of three parts:

  1. The product or service that you sell

  2. You and what sets you apart from others

  3. Your dream customer and what they need

A logo is the identifying mark associated with your business or organization that supports your overall brand. Your logo should be timeless, memorable, straightforward and versatile. The other visual aspects of your brand, things like colors, fonts and imagery make up your brand identity.

If you donโ€™t have money to invest in a brand just yet, what should you do?

Create a clean logo mark with simple fonts and colors that represent your brand until youโ€™re ready to hire a designer that can help you establish a brand and brand identity. You should approach creating your brand identity as an investment in your business rather than something you need for your profile pic on Facebook or website.

When youโ€™re ready to invest in your brand, what steps should you take?

  • Do your research: Look for different brand designers, someone who has a style that resonates with you even after youโ€™re done viewing their portfolio.

  • Do they offer what you need? Some designers offer specific packages or customized offerings based on your needs, some can help you with your website also, it pays to shop around.

  • Do they have examples of other projects to show you? Check out the brands that they have helped style, do they still use the brand identity, is the brand applying what the designer created for them?

  • Above all, creating your brand should be a collaborative process. Ask yourself if you jive with the designer. Can you see yourself being able to work together to create your perfect brand.
